ICEL Recap October: Stress Relief with Angel Shannon

As we all know, the Holidays are just around the corner. Excitement and anticipation fills the air as Thanksgiving and Christmas approach. With that, also comes the feelings of stress. In ICEL’s October meeting, Angel Shannon came and spoke to us about the importance of stress relief.

How can we, as she put it, be “actively calm and calmly active”? She listed some great things that we can do to be calm in stressful situations. They are:

  • Breathe, own the space and acknowledge what is around you.
  • Learn how to say no. Try to adopt the this in “NO”vember.
  • Time management. Find what is okay to make as a priority for tomorrow.
  • Build a helpful team around you that can take things off your plate.
  • Start your day when you wake up and not when you walk through the door of your office.
  • Be intentional.
  • Sit in nature.
  • Journal.
  • Try to get 8 hours of sleep.

Angel also suggested setting yourself up for stressful situations. Prepare your mind and emotions if you are aware that a stressful situation is coming up. Center your focus and energy on the things you CAN control. Acknowledge the questions that you need answered and be willing to allow others to “sleep on it,” but make sure that you follow up.

Let me leave you with these 4 words that Angel left us with in the hope that as we go through our busy lives and work through the stress of all we have going on that we BREATH, BELIEVE, RECEIVE, and ACHIEVE.
