Spring into Action

The weather outside is getting a little warmer and the days are getting longer. Both are signs that spring is on its way. I love spring! So many changes and opportunities come about this time of year.

For ICEL members, one of the great opportunities that comes in spring is the chance to get involved with the ICEL Committee and sub-Committees. April is the month when new chair and vice chair take their places and begin their adventure.

ICEL is a member-run organization and depends on members for the operation of this group. This is where the opportunities come in. As a member of a committee, you will help shape ICEL for the upcoming year.

Committees work together to plan speakers for the lunch meetings, prepare the newsletter, inform members of educational opportunities, help to increase membership and much more.

There are several different committees. You can choose to participate in something that plays to your particular strengths or stretch yourself by getting involved in something a little outside of your comfort zone.

If you are thinking that this sounds like a lot of work or a huge responsibility, think again. It is very important work, but the time commitment is less than you might think. The full committee meets once per month and subcommittees generally only meet a few other times per year. Many of these meetings are virtual so you don’t even need to drive to attend.

Now I bet you are wondering what you get out of all of this. Your input will help decide what ICEL is going to look like in the next year. But more importantly, you will have the chance to work with other credit professionals, building contacts and friendships. You also will have the opportunity to improve your leadership skills while working as part of a team.

Now you may be thinking, “I’ve never been on a board or committee like this before. What could I offer?” This is a great place to start. The members and NACM staff are incredibly supportive while you are getting settled into your new role and remember that the committee is always looking for new and different perspectives. You have much more to offer than you realize.

So, if in the next few weeks, you are invited to participate on one of the ICEL committees, remember the difference you can make and be willing to grab on to this opportunity.
