ICEL Recap: The Art of Conversation: How to Engage in Meaningful Networking

The May ICEL program was presented by Amee Miner CBA, from Sunpro Corporation.

I would first like to say WOW!  I really enjoyed this meeting. There was such a happy vibe to this meeting. Amee really let us in, and I feel like I got to know her through her presentation. I felt that she genuinely practices this topic of meaningful relationships.  She also shared some stories that made me laugh out loud. I can’t wait for the opportunity to chat with Amee one on one.

My takeaway from the meeting was “be vulnerable”.  If you want to make a meaningful connection, you must be willing to be vulnerable. I felt like this means your willingness to share your experiences personal and professional. For me, some days are much easier than others to share your experiences but when you meet someone that has the willingness to connect with you it is much easier to make that meaningful connection.

Unfortunately, some of the statistics Amee shared show we are not all able to connect.  2023 Harvard Research shows that 58% of Americans report that they sometimes or always feel like no one knows them well. To get the conversation started, Amee gave us 5 suggestions:

  1. Ask open-ended questions.
  2. Be vulnerable and be willing to share about yourself.
  3. Adopt an attitude of curiosity.
  4. Be thoughtful, try to imagine yourself in “their shoes”.
  5. Find ways that you can learn something new.

Amee’s summary was Conversations lead to -> Relationships -> Friendships.
