Character in the Credit Department
Christi Cupp, CBA, Midwest Floor Coverings

I was recently asked by the Vice President of our flooring division what we are doing in the credit department that is different from years past. It was a huge compliment. He continued to tell me that he used to get calls and comments from customers about issues they were having with the credit department and they were not happy. He said now all he hears is good things!

As I thought about what has changed over the past few years, I realized that it is Character.

One of the five Cs of credit is Character as you all know but I am talking about the Character of our credit team. I was asked to write an article, and this is not one of my strong suits for sure. I couldn't decide on a topic, so I went to my manager, Kandie Haymore, and told her I was struggling on what to write. I told her I felt like I was really good at my job, but writing is not something I am good at. She said, "write about what you do in your job and what you do so well."

I have worked in the credit department for 12 years at Midwest Floors. We have had our ups and downs over the years, but the past 4 years have been incredible. As I mentioned, I believe the way our department runs is a reflection on our credit team.

There are 4 people in the credit department, including myself. Our company's vision is "to offer service our customers" and I can say we definitely do this. It is so important to have a good rapport with each customer whether they are good or not so good. Everyone has those problem customers they deal with but the way we handle the situation has a big influence on how they pay us. I hear my co-worker on the phone with customers and I can't believe how genuine and caring she is with each of them. I feel like I have become a better person because of her. I want to make sure I am giving my customers the same respect and attention, so they feel important. When a customer is behind on payments, we let them know we have empathy and we are willing to work with them and this has worked in our favor.

The four of us work as a team and we are available to one another whenever needed. It makes it so nice to come to work every day knowing that you have the support of such good people to work with and learn from every day.

"Be honest, be nice, be a flower not a weed." -Aaron Neville

The main thing you have to remember on this journey is, just be nice to everyone and always smile. I think it's important to always keep professional and surround yourself with good people, work hard, and be nice to everyone.
